LPN nursing jobs in NYC

Question by Barney Blake: LPN nursing jobs in NYC?

Before anyone says, “Don’t waste your time being an LPN, go right to school for RN”, I am early into the LPN program as I write this and am, as of this time, only going to go for the LPN.

That said, how is the job market for LPNs in New York City? Are there alot of jobs for LPNs in NYC? How is the pay? How is the pay compared to the cost of living in NYC?
Can you think of any other places where there are plenty of jobs for LPNs that pay well and the cost of living isn’t ridiculous? Someplace in New Jersey, perhaps, or Maryland, Delaware, or Virginia?

Here in PA, the average starting salary for an LPN at a hospital is between and per hour, at nursing homes it ranges from to per hour (for LPNs). I would desire to make at least per hour to start (I want to be able to pay off student loans within a year, then save for a down payment on a house, buy the house, be able to pay bills and mortgage with plenty left over to save).

Transcribing orders nursing

Questions – I want to run something by everyone. I grad in 30 days or so I hope but I failed a test out on taking a telephone order. The reason why is that I had a order to do vitals and neuro checks in 30 min then in 60 min then q8h for 24 hours. I wrote all of that on one line and I guess you are not suppose to do that? I was told that you can write labs all on one line and x-ray. Did I really goof up or are my professors being picky? Thanks everyone.

Answer – Your instructor is right, but every hospital has their own policy in transcribing orders over the phone. Technically, an LVN is not able to take orders over the phone and an RN needs to do that, but yes, you would write every item on a different line to distinguish between what is to be done.

LPN step test

Answer – I’m taking the ATI LPN step test tomorrow. It’s the entrance exam for our LPN to RN program. This is the first year that they are using the step test. It was previously the GAP test.
There were 60 people invited to sit for the test and 20-30 will be chosen for the program. Has anyone had any experience with this test? My school does utilize the ATI program and I have all the practice tests available to me. I have met at or above national average with all of them so far. I took the practice test and made a 66% shhesh. Scary. I’m had all A’s last semester. I graduate the LPN program in Dec. So, i think I may be at a slight disadvantage because I’m missing the last 1/2 of our last semester (3 total after prereqs). Well that all seems clear as mud. Just would love someone’s input.

Questions – HI Jennifer,

I haven’t heard of the STEP up exam. I have taken TEAS and the format for that is completely different. I would get theTEAS study guide and do some of the practice tests. How did you do on the STEP assesment? I am trying to figure out if my score was any good

good luck email me if you have any other TEAS questions.

LPN interview

I just got accepted to an LPN program. I was extremely nervous, cool as a cucumber until I was faced with the coordinator lol. I wore a navy pant suit, pearls, with minimal makeup. If getting into the program means a lot to you, then let that show. I brought originals and copies of anything that might be asked for (bls card, diploma, admissions essay etc). Take notes! It’ll be hard to remember everything s/he says and it’ll show em what kind of student you’ll be, a prepared student! You probably have questions you wanna ask, write em and ask em. Make sure you research your school, find out what makes it a great institution. Lastly, try not to fidget, smile and keep good eye contact. Good luck.

CNA to LPN

In today’s world, the candidates, who have advance qualification and certification, have better chances of getting superior job offers along with impressive salary packages. In the field of nursing also, this thing is applicable. Becoming a CNA is the first step in the nursing career and the individuals have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge by applying for the LPN programs after that.

The following are some of the important features of the training courses, differences and the path required in the transformation from CNA to LPN:

Both certified nursing assistants and the licensed practical nurses work under the supervisions of physicians or registered nurses.
The skills required to become a LPN are more than those required to become a CNA.
The responsibilities assigned to the CNA’s are less complicated. Some of them include caring for patients, assisting patients in routine activities, dressing, bathing and so on. On the other hand, the duties given to the licensed nurses are much more complicated and the major ones include recording the health history of patients, providing medication to the ailing individuals, sterilizing, geriatric care, glucose testing, and other such tasks.
