Economy delays expected nursing shortage

Though a national nursing shortage has long been foreseen, the economy seems to have delayed the shortage. According to the Missouri Hospital Association, the RN vacancy rate was down from 8.8 percent in 2004 to 4.1 percent in 2009. The MHA also reported a 3.7 percent vacancy rate in Southeast Missouri, compared to a 3.9 percent Missouri total vacancy. The numbers may be encouraging, but the shortage has far from disappeared, say local medical providers.

From 2003 to 2005, the role of a private duty nurse on the popular US daytime drama Passions was played by an orangutan. The character, Precious, actually wore a nursing uniform. Fortunately, her work did not prevent her from enjoying handsome Latino men, gin and tonics, and food fights.

Visitor Shoots Doctor at Johns Hopkins

Just heard about the shooting at Johns Hopkins. Apparently, some man was upset about the care his mother was receiving and shot the doctor. Doctor is in surgery, hospital is being partially evacuated and the whole community is in lockdown.

Patient dies after Nurse Discharges from Triage

A 16 year old was discharged from triage in a rural hospital in Australia this week

He was suffering from temps to 40 and persistent vomiting – unfortunately he died during the night after discharge from triage, and at this stage the media has slanted their bias against the hospital.

The nurse assessed him to be suffering from a viral illness, and treated him with hydralite ice blocks, panadol & gave an info booklet on gastro prior to discharge.lpn to rn programs

Nurses to get first aid lessons

Very soon trainee nurses will also be trained to save lives in cases of emergency. The rookies will get their first aid lessons and management of life-threatening incidents after official concerns over falling skill levels.

Chaminade Univ. Starts Nursing Program

HONOLULU — Chaminade University dedicated a nurse education center Thursday night for its brand new nursing program.

Many recent nursing graduates are unable to find work in Hawaii because the recession forced many older nurses to stay on the job, so a predicted nursing shortage fueled by retiring baby boomers never materialized in the islands.

9 nurses at rehab center indicted for improper care

TROY, N.Y. (AP) – Nine nurses at an Albany-area nursing home have been named in a 175-count indictment charging them with not properly caring for a patient and falsifying records to cover the neglect.

The state attorney general’s indictment says the workers failed to turn and position an immobile 53-year-old resident at Northwoods Rehabilitation Center in Troy. Nursing staff also are accused of failing to administer medications, treat bed sores, and change wet undergarments.
